I have said over and over again, “Awareness comes in stages!” and today I have to say it again, because this morning I have opened my eyes to a whole new level of awareness – and I want to share.

Yellow Brick RoadThe story of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz is my metaphor. Dorothy’s quest for home resonates with our own desire to return home, but our home is not Kansas, no, our home is with God. Seeking God starts us on our own endless search for magical solutions somewhere outside of ourselves. While navigating the metaphysical yellow-brick road we come in contact with our own wicked witch, good witch, tin man, scarecrow, lion, oh, and let’s not forget the Wizard. We search because as bodies that’s what we do; seek, seek, and seek some more.

The body is an instrument of time. The body is an instrument of ‘doing’. It hunts, it seeks, it lives in the past; reacting and projecting according to perceptions and beliefs held deep in the unconscious and it lives for the future; seeking revenge for past wrongs, and promising rewards for goals achieved.

Remember how Dorothy got home? Glinda, the good witch told her all she needed to do was ‘click’ her ruby red heels together and say, “There’s no place like home.” A Course in Miracles message is the same:

To do nothing is to rest, and make a place within you where the activity of the body ceases to demand attention. Into this place the Holy Spirit comes, and there abides. A Course in Miracles

You have reached the place of ‘non-doing’, a silent moment where your mind joins with The Holy Spirit. Remember this moment, because when the activities of the body begin again, and they will – it was only a moment; a small boat of ‘non-doing’ surrounded by an ocean of ‘doing’.

For some I suppose reaching this ‘non-doing’ place needs little effort but for most of us – it is work, and this work is ‘undoing’ the ‘doing’; the old perceptions and beliefs controlling the strings attached to our body. If you are a student of A Course in Miracles then you know all about ‘undoing’. If you are new to this way of thinking, go to Lessons on the ‘Main Menu’ and study all the lessons in the section labeled Undoing.

Waking up to the warmth of the sun piercing through the open spaces of my blinds and before I had a thought of coffee, bacon, or beach, I had an ‘aha’ moment of awareness! It filled me with inspiration. This awareness allowed me to imagine ‘non-doing’ while ‘doing’. Yes! Joining with The Holy Spirit in that quiet space of ‘non-doing’ all the while my physical activities continue ‘doing’. I never thought that was possible until today and now I know it is, and yes, that is why I keep saying, “Awareness comes in stages!”

Let’s summarize: Visiting the place of ‘non-doing’ requires advance work; 1) training the mind to observe ego/wrong mind perceptions and beliefs coming from the deep dark corners of the unconscious is crucial, 2) taking responsibility for these ego/wrong mind thoughts is painful, and 3) forgiving these ego/wrong mind thoughts is medicinal.

The first time we enter the place of ‘non-doing’ is memorable and never becomes tiresome, no; in fact it spurs us on to visit again. And the more we visit, the smaller the ocean of ‘doing’ becomes, and the deeper our awareness. In turn, the strings attached to our body fall away and The Holy Spirit helps guide us to our final destination (Home with God) in the most optimal way, initiating a life of service and creative endeavors filled with meaningful ‘doing’ rather than busy idling.
