A Course in Miracles

What is A Course in Miracles?

Joey, A Course in Miracles says… Joey, you should study A Course in Miracles. Joey, from the pages of A Course in Miracles… Savannah is a student of A Course in Miracles and she was always reminding me where the core principles of her teaching came from. I purchased the big blue book a few days ago. Twenty pages into the Text and I hear Savannah’s words to me in every paragraph.

This is A Course in Miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The Course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love; for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. A Course in Miracles

A Course in Miracles was scribed by Dr. Helen Schucman, a clinical and research psychologist at Columbia University, through a process of inner dictation she identified as coming from Jesus.

ACIMIn 1965, Dr. Schucman experienced what she described as a Voice in her mind, saying, ‘This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.’ Her colleague, Dr. William Thetford, assisted her during the seven years it took to transcribe 1,500 type written pages. The pages became a three-volume curriculum, consisting of a Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers.

A Course in Miracles is a modern spiritual teaching, not a religion, designed as an educational program in spiritual development. Its aim is to completely reverse the way we perceive the world. Unlike some other thought systems, A Course in Miracles does not suggest withdrawal from the world. It teaches that our relationships offer us unique and valuable opportunities for learning, awakening, and healing.

This work and this healing takes place through the practice of forgiveness. Indeed, forgiveness is the center of the practice of A Course in Miracles – we will accomplish nothing even if we fully understand the theory of A Course in Miracles without applying forgiveness to our everyday lives. Forgiveness does not mean condoning or agreeing with a horrendous act. It is a decision to no longer attack one’s self. Forgiveness is, quite simply, the decision not to suffer. To forgive is to make the decision to be happy, to let go of judgements, to stop hurting others and ourselves, and to stop recycling anger and fear. Forgiveness is the bridge to compassion, to inner peace, and to a peaceful world.

The language of A Course in Miracles is extraordinarily rich and profound. Many sections of the Text and Workbook are very poetic and written in blank verse, and have led some people to compare the Course with some of the world’s great literature.

The thought system of the Course is intellectually sophisticated, and combines spiritual inspiration with deep psychological understanding of such phenomena as belief and defense systems, perception and identity. However, A Course in Miracles is also very practical. The daily Workbook lessons provide a systematic, step-by-step approach by which one can apply the principles of the Course. The lessons do not require a lot of time nor long practice periods, but they do require a willingness to question every value one holds as to what the world is all about, and the willingness to see things differently – through the eyes of God.
